August Plant of the Month

The ONE plant you need in your garden in August…

August can be a funny one in the garden…the early summer stars have had their moment, everything’s looking a bit frazzled, and you find yourself needing something to waft in and save the day… Say hello to Japanese anemone 🌸

✅ Flowers from late summer into autumn, so they bridge that awkward gap between summer colour and autumn interest
✅ Flowers in soft pinks, richer purples & crisp white, all with gorgeous golden centres
✅ Happiest in partial shade, so they’re brilliant for those slightly tricky borders that don’t know what they want to be
✅ Great for adding light, airy height
✅ Pollinators love them, especially when there’s a bit less around later in the season 🐝
✅ Low maintenance — simply deadhead to keep them going into Autumn, then just cut the whole lot back to the ground when it starts looking tatty
✅ They bulk up over time, which means plants for free if you want to divide them later 🙌
✅ Gorgeous in a cottage-style border, underplanting shrubs, softening a fence line or bringing a bit of romance to a shady corner

A word of caution though: they can be enthusiastic once they’re happy, so don’t pop them somewhere tiny and expect them to politely stay put. Give them room to spread or keep them in check by showing them who’s boss and remove any unwanted wanderers in Spring.
