The ONE plant you need to plant in January...
The mighty Hellebore!
What a way to kick off my new series of stalwarts of the ‘big impact, low maintenance’ gardening ethos of which I’m such a huge advocate. Each month I’ll share my top recommendation of the plant that should be in every garden, helping you to build 12 months of interest and you’ll barely have to lift a pair of secateurs to keep it all looking good, I promise.
Amazing in a patio pot or in the ground, these are one of my absolute favourite plants. Ssssshhhh don’t tell any of the others - it’s like trying to pick your favourite child 😬
✅ Evergreen
✅ Flower from December/January until April/May
✅ Structural seed heads then remain, or you can cut right back to make space for summer perennials
✅ Available in whites, pale greens, pinks, purples, reds & almost black
✅ Zero maintenance - simply chop back tatty flower heads/foliage when you notice it / need the space / in December when new flower shoots are getting ready to emerge
✅ Amazing early pollen source for emerging insects when little else is in flower 🐝
✅ Plant in shade or part shade (as long as they won’t get scorched by hot midday Summer sun, they’ll be happy)
Seriously, what’s not to like?! Why stare at depressing bare ground when you could be looking at one of these beauties…
