May Plant of the Month

The ONE plant you need in your garden in May…

You might be thinking Peony season is upon us - at long last it’s her time to shine - but hell no, much like Wisteria, I appreciate her beauty, but mostly in other people’s gardens. Her blooms are too few, too short lived and she takes up way too much space in the border vs the return that you get. So move over Peony and say hello to your new May garden staple…

Heuchera!

For some, these are a bit of a @marmite plant, but here’s why I think they’re a 10/10 and deserve a place in your garden…

✅ Available from deep burgundy, near black & rich purple, to bright lime green, orange, red and even silver!
✅ Evergreen ground cover (everlime/everorange/everpurple/everred etc - you get the picture…but in December & January when there isn’t much else around, imagine seeing pops of colour like this glowing around your garden!)
✅ Bomb-proof! Seriously tough plants that just look good with zero effort
✅ Good in shade/part-shade and whilst not actively shouted about, I’ve got 3 in the hottest/sunniest parts of my garden and they’re absolutely fine
✅ Great fillers in pots or at the front of your borders
✅ Flowers June - August
✅ Practically zero maintenance - simply snip off faded flower stalks at the base and any tatty leaves as and when you notice them
✅ Easily divided giving you new plants for free

These could just as easily be my plant of the month for November, but the reason I’m recommending them now is that they add great early season colour whilst you’re waiting for some of your flowing perennials to get going, and then they just keep giving and giving all year round…
